Whelan, who attends Christ Church, an Assemblies of God congregation, regularly sends letters, cards, e-mails and care packages to soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo. Whelan says she tries to write at least two letters a day to troops who have expressed an interest in receiving mail. She gets the names from the Web site http://AnySoldier.com. "At first I wanted to adopt all of them," Whelan says. "As I read down the long list I pray. It overwhelms me sometimes as I see the names of hundreds of troops who want someone to write to them." Whelan and her husband, Bob, who served as a pilot in Vietnam, send out packages containing everything from bubble gum to holiday decorations. The Whelans have received numerous letters of appreciation, along with flags and other mementos, from grateful soldiers. One female soldier grew so close to Beverley through their correspondence that she drove from Arkansas to Fort Worth to meet her while home on leave. "Hearing from these kids brings joy without measure, and I plan to continue this as long as they are there and as long as I am able," Beverley says. "Some of my friends have joined me in encouraging and easing the loneliness of our American soldiers." --Evelyn Mills, Today's Pentecostal Evangel ----------------------------------------------------------------- ** BGMC launches kids Web site After hundreds of hours of design, field study, and development, the national BGMC office has recently launched a new kids¹ Web site packed with fun, intrigue, and resources that challenge kids to reach their world (where they live) and the world for Jesus! ³BGMCKids is a powerful teaching tool that can be used at home and in churches with Internet access,² says Marshall Bruner, national BGMC office. ³It¹s colorful.
